Endline Evaluation of the “Accelerating
Youth-led Businesses in the Digital Era” Programme
Summary
One South is seeking a Local Research Manager in India, to coordinate data collection activities for the Endline Evaluation of the “Accelerating Youth-led Businesses in the Digital Era Programme” by Youth Business International (YBI UK). The Research Manager will be responsible for coordinating a group of Qualitative Research Assistants (QRAs) for collecting qualitative data in-person and (in rare cases) over Zoom.
This is a part-time position (a total of 17 days, compensated with US$1190, plus airtime and travel costs) ideal for a recent graduate or someone pursuing their master's degree. Data Collection will be taking place mid/end July 2022 (under the observation of the current COVID-19 situation) and includes:
§ Understanding the activities and objectives of the programme and evaluation;
§ 1 Day Interviewing and recruiting a group of 3-6 Qualitative Research Assistants (QRAs) for Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews) in Chennai, Faridabad and Pune
§ 1 Day Interviewing and recruiting transcribers and translators for Hindi, Tamil, and Maharati into English
§ 1 Day Piloting of Data Collection Tools;
§ 1 Day Translation of Qualitative Tools
§ 1 Day Support Training of QRAs
§ Logistical Planning of 60+ FGD/KIIs in person
§ Up to 10 Days of Data Collection:
o Following the research ethics set out by One South
o Scheduling interviews in advance together with QRAs
o Making sure consent is obtained by the participant(s) prior to starting interview
o Collecting and recording data as accurately as possible and within the established timeframe (including daily targets)
o Quality control of sessions conducted and providing regular feedback to QRAs
o Recording all qualitative sessions and providing audio recordings asap to transcription and translation team
o Coordination of transcriber/translator team;
o Ensuring that QRAs complete debriefing forms after each session
o Compiling all transcripts, debriefing forms, and audio files for One South team within timeframe agreed
o Handing in completed assignments on time
o Diligently following instructions received from the One South team and seeking technical assistance from One South where necessary
o Representing One South, YBI and local partners in a professional and courteous manner at all times
o Maintaining your own health and safety

Background
Youth Business International (YBI) is a global network of expert organisations in over 50 countries supporting underserved young people to turn their ideas into successful businesses, creating jobs and strengthening communities. In India YBI partners with its member the “Bharatiya Yuva Shakti Trust“ (BYST). BYST works in Maharashtra (Pune District) & Tamil Nadu (Kanchipuram & Thiruvallur Districts) as well as Rural Haryana (in 50 km radius of Faridabad and Gurugram).
Millions of young people in India are unemployed or in low-wage, low-skilled or unsafe jobs. Many are not equipped to deal with the rapidly changing world of work. Without access to decent and stable income young people are unable to provide a better future for themselves and their families.
The Accelerating Youth-Led Businesses in the Digital Era Programme equips young people in India with the entrepreneurship skills they need to start, grow and sustain their businesses. The programme runs for three years (2019-2022) and benefits young people through the following activities:
• Training in business skills, digital skills and decent work practices
• mentoring
• accessing new markets though networking;
• Facilitating access to local financial services;
Deliverables
The deliverables for this consultancy shall be the following:
1. Interviewing and Hiring of qualified QRAs, transcribers and translators ready to support data collection; and providing One South with a list of candidates interviewed and chosen
2. Coordinate sampling with member organization and One South and share planned data collection schedule
3. Submission on time of all audio recordings, transcripts, and debriefing forms for all sessions specified in sampling design and the following regional distribution
4. Submission of Field Reports
Profile of Candidate
The candidate is expected to have the following qualifications and skills:
• Recent Graduate or current Master’s or PhD student (Anthropology, Education, Social Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, Psychology, Development, Humanities, Statistics, or related fields)
• Knowledge of the SME sector in India
• Experience collecting and coordinating qualitative data collection activities
• Excellent communication and social skills
• Based in Chennai, Faridabad, or Pune
• Knowledge of Hindi and English; preferably also Tamil or Mahrati
